Mound in Clogharinka

At the S end of steep-sided N-S ridge, on a slight terrace along the E side of the Dinin river valley. There are very good views N, S and W across and along the Dinin valley, but the view E is limited by uplands. According to Rev. Pearson (Anon. 1849-51, 27), this mound was, 'particularly worthy of examination, not only from its great extent and perfect state of preservation, but as local tradition positively affirmed it to be a place of graves of a very remote era - in fact, that "Irish warriors," as was the phrase of the peasantry, were there interred'. The monument is heavily overgrown with impenetrable brambles making detail examination impossible. The 25-inch OS map indicates a mound (top diam. c. 5m; basal diam. c. 13m) enclosed by a wide fosse (Wth c. 6m). When visited it could be seen that the brambles were obscuring a steep-sided mound (H 3-4m). There was no visible fosse, though whether this was due to the brambles obscuring this feature, or the feature being back-filled, if it had existed, is uncertain. Based on current information this monument is classified as a mound, as a more specific classification, i. e. whether it is a small motte or a bowl-barrow, cannot be made with certainty.
