Shearman (1876-8, 196) mentions that, 'near Bysert is a small townland, "Crossy Brenan," i.e., St. Brenan's Cross, where doubtless in times long past the symbol of Redemption was erected by the St. Brendan of Dysert'. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 454), 'Crossybrenan, Irish sound, Crush-ee-Vraeno-ing, i.e. Crois Ui Bhraenáin, O'Brenan's Cross. A field here called "the crush," bordering on the River Dinin, marks the site of the Cross'. The presumption that the townland name suggests the presence of a cross may be erroneous as the 'cross' element may also refer to a named crossroads associated with a Brennan surname [https://www.logainm.ie/en/26593?s=crossybrennan].
