What is recorded here

In flat parkland of Clone House, on slightly rising land on the W side of the Nore river valley. When described in the OS Letters (1839) all that survived upstanding was, 'One strongly groined vault of the old Castle of Cloone' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 89 (30)). Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 326) notes that a, 'small fragment of Clone Castle, the seat of the Purcells, may still be seen at Clone House', however, on the 1900 revision of the 6-inch OS map the description has changed from 'in ruins' on the 1st (1839) ed. to 'site of'. The castle is not visible at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 6 February 2018
