Tighe (1802, 625) mentions, 'On the lands of Ballyspellin, not very far from the spa, is a very large stone, which was formerly supported on smaller ones; it is called by the county people Clogh-bannagh, stone of blessing: not far from it, is a conical stone, lying on its side. Referring to this stone the OS Letters (1839) note that, 'nobody has seen or heard anything about it for forty years back. There are some large stones in a field near the Spa Well, but they are not known by any names' (O'Flanagan (ed.) 1930, vol. 1, 150 (49)). When the area was visited in 1987 there was no local recollection of these stones. The spa house is indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map and the spa house and spa well at the same location on the 1900 revision, in the SE angle of the townland, adjacent to Spahill townland boundary. This feature is unlocated within the townland.
