In the early 1870s (Anon. 1872-3, 115-16), a cist containing an urn was uncovered during ploughing. The covering stone is described as, ‘a large unhewn limestone, about 4 feet [1.2m] by 20 inches [0.52m] broad, and 6 [0.15m] or 8 [0.21m] inches thick’, while the cist itself is, ‘about 18 inches [0.47m] in diameter and 2 feet 9 inches [0.84m] deep’ with side walls of dry-stone walling (ibid.). According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 104-5), ‘Cists with urns containing calcined human bones, have been uprooted in the fields at the entrance of Coole bosheen; several other cists yet remain undisturbed, covered over by only a few inches of earth’. The precise location of the cists within the townland is unknown.
