What is recorded here

Towards the base of a steep E-facing slope of hill, in waterlogged terrain in rough grazing. It is 4m from an E-W running bank and ditch, the latter carries fast flowing water from the top of the hill and possibly incorporates a channelised stream. Good to extensive views N-E, otherwise limited by rising ground. Marked with an 'x' onto the SMR OS 6-inch working sheet and annotated 'ff' for fulacht fia. A flat-topped mound (dims. 9.7m N-S; 6.7m E-W; H 0.8m N and W; H 0.2m S) only clearly defined on E side, W side merges into the hill slope. There are quite a number of low mounds in this field but none as pronounced as this. Also the other mounds seem to be composed of a much lighter colour clay with no stones. This mound is composed of darker clay with a lot of small stones beneath the sod, possibly fire-cracked. The ground immediately E of the mound is very waterlogged and would be the likely location for a trough. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 9 April 2018
