Children's burial ground in An Fearann Iarthach

This site is located midway between KE106-042---- and KE106-046---- and is known locally as a burial ground. It may have originally been a stone fort or an early ecclesiastical site. It is roughly circular in plan and is enclosed by a denuded stone wall. It measures 25.7m N-S x 23.7m E-W internally. The wall is best preserved at NW, where it consists of a rubble core faced internally and externally with coursed drystone masonry. It has a maximum internal height of 1.4m and averages 2.2m wide. A 1.65m wide entrance gap is located at SE; its S side is defined by two slabs, one upright and one on edge. The poorly preserved foundations of a circular hut abut the inner face of the enclosing element at SW; it has overall dimensions of 7.7m N-S x 8.6m E-W. Adjacent to this, at N, appears to be the lintelled ope to a blocked souterrain; this measures .85m x .45m. Occupying the N half of the interior of the site are three amorphous and two rectangular mounds that may cover graves. They are sod-covered and are composed of large quantities of stone, upright slabs and quartz. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
