What is recorded here

Calluragh Burial Ground: This site is depicted on the first edition of the OS map as an oval-shaped area, but is marked only as ‘site of’ on the second edition. A pound now occupies this location in rough pasture on the fairly steep E slopes of Trusk mountain, overlooking the Finglas river from N to E. Traces of an earlier structure appear to underlie the walls of the pound at N and E, which has an internal diameter of 3.4m. Four recumbent slabs occur SW of the pound, but there are no identifiable grave-markers. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1019. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
