Hut site in Grousemount

New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Grousemount, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. The rectangular structure is constructed with random, loose dry-stones and is located to the immediate west of steeply sloping, craggy, higher ground which provides shelter to the southeast, east and northeast. There are views of the Roughty River valley to the west and southwest. The structure measures c.3.8m in length east-west by 3.5m in width north-south. The west wall is best preserved being eight courses and 1.2m in height, with a wall width of 0.75m. The south wall is also 0.75m in width but is only one to two courses high with an average height of 0.8m. The east wall, measuring 2.1m in length with an average height of 0.8m, is shortened due to the presence of a probable entrance in the northeast corner of the structure. A constructed wall is less evident on the north side of structure as it appears to be partially dug into the hillside and utilising natural rock outcropping in this area. The interior of the structure, which measures c. 3m east-west by 2m north-south, is at a similar level to the surrounding exterior. A low mound of earth and stone measuring 0.6m in height, which possibly forms an annex, extends in an arc from the northwest corner of the structure terminating at a point 1.5m west of the west wall and 1.4m south of the northern limit of the structure.
