Structure in Coolnagoppoge (glanarought By., Banawn Ed)

New site identified by John Cronin & Associates (JCA) under Licence No. 16E0127 prior to wind farm development in Coolnagoppoge, Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry by ESB Wind Development Ltd. Sub-oval, earthen and stone platform located outside the development fence-line on a moderate southeast facing slope between T.35 and T.38 (ITM grid co-ordinate 506753, 572171). Measures c.7.3m NW-SE by 4.8m NE-SW. The feature is defined on its north-western side by a single course of low drystone walling (c.0.3m high, c.0.3m to 0.5m wide), one upright orthostat is present in the centre of the north-western wall of the feature. The orthostat measures 0.60m high, 0.60m wide and 0.12m thick, its long axis is aligned north to south. The defining wall around the north-western side of the feature merges into a platform of earth and stone which rises 0.4m to 0.5m above the surrounding sloping ground to the east, west and south of the feature. Some evidence of scarping around the feature to east, west and south. This may have provided the soil for the platform as well as creating a terraced area mid slope on which to the construct the feature. May have functioned as a structure platform or alternatively a hay/turf drying platform. Similar in morphology to sites such as NICH12 and NICH16. See attached photograph courtesy John Cronin.
