This plantation settlement was founded by Sir William Petty in the 1670/80s and, according to Barrington (1976, 295), it was located just to the N of the present town of Kenmare (formerly known as Nedeen). The plantation phase of the settlement effectively came to an end in 1689 when the protestant settlers were forced to flee to the 'White House' (KE093-100----) at Killowen by local Jacobite forces. The house was put under siege and eventually the settlers surrendered and were expelled (Lyne 1977, 22-3). The exact location of this 17th-century settlement cluster is unknown but it is likely that the present town of Kenmare is sited on or near the original settlement.
