In pasture, on the N side of the valley of the Roughty River. The castle has been removed by quarrying. It was named 'site of Shanagarry Castle' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. In the 1840s it was recorded as the 'ruin of an old castle almost erased' (OSNB, Kenmare no. 4, 2). 'Shangarry' was described in 1841 as having its foundations only barely traceable and only one wall remaining with evidence of grouting (OSL, 183). Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 38) noted that 'the foundation is only now visible'.
