Rock art in Derryleagh

In rough and overgrown ground, just beyond a field fence on the banks of a mountain stream. Partially obscured by bushes, moss and undergrowth. Three rock art sites were recorded in the immediate area: KE091-108---, KE091-109--- and KE091-027--- but all of these have been removed or covered over before more recent surveys during land reclamation work (ie. Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly 2017).  Rock art described by Ken Williams as; 'Massive earthfast boulder, partially concealed by bushes and undergrowth. Its full dimensions are difficult to establish, but it measures at least 3m x 1.5m and 1.3m high. The size of the boulder and its location on un-reclaimed land suggest it remains in situ and is not one of the three previously recorded rock art sites in the immediate area. The decoration occurs on the top surface and the south-facing sloped side nearest the fence. The decoration also does not match the description any of the three previously recorded sites, none of which are now visible.   The top surface of the boulder is mostly concealed by earth and undergrowth and the visible decoration may extend further than is now apparent. The decoration on the top surface is very weathered and occurs on the southern end of the boulder. It consists of at least 11 cup marks, five of which have evidence of an external ring. Two of the cup marks are unusually large, c.0.12m in diameter, one of these has the best-preserved enclosing ring, while the other has no evidence of having had an enclosing ring. These two large cup marks are separated from the remaining cup marks by a natural fissure in the stone. The decoration on the south-facing sloped edge of the stone consists of three cup marks in a line, two of which have enclosing rings. The leftmost cup and ring has a curved picked line running from the bottom of the ring, while the cup and ring next to it has two curved lines running from the bottom of the ring, all of which are approximately 0.12m in length.  Both the top and sloped edge of the boulder feature dispersed picking and some of the natural vertical linear features running down the sloped edge may have been improved by picking'.  Unrecorded rock art panel identified by Ken Williams.   Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details from Ken Williams.
