What is recorded here

This monument is located on the crest of a low ridge which runs parallel to the River Blackwater. About 100m to N is a standing stone (KE091-043002-), while in the bog at E are a number of relatively modern fionnán enclosures. The ring-barrow survives as a well-preserved, level, circular area, c. 7.5m in diameter, which is defined by a fosse and an external earthen bank. The fosse is 1.1m wide and averages .7m deep, while the bank ranges from 1.2m to 2.5m wide and averages .8m high externally. The overall diameter of the site averages 15m. Access to the interior is by means of two opposed causewayed entrances at E and W. The gap in the bank at E, 2.15m wide, is flanked on either side by a slab set on edge, while two large slabs, which now lie prostrate on the S edge of the causeway at W, may have originally flanked the 2.5m wide entrance here. Both causeways are well-defined and average 2m wide. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 440. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 28 July 2013
