Lissaree — Boolananave

Internal diam. c. 33.5m N-S, 34.4m E-W Lissaree/ Lios an Fhraoigh (?): This impressive bivallate ringfort is located in elevated pasture on the W side of the small valley that opens onto Coongar Harbour. The roughly oval-shaped interior is enclosed by two earthen banks separated by a fosse, the outer bank being preserved only from N to W. It rises from .45m to 1.5m above external ground level, measures from .5m to 1.8m high above the fosse and is 4.3m wide at base. A modern drain cuts through it at SSW, close to a trackway which skirts the site at this point. A short stretch of stone walling on its inner face at SE appears to be of modern date. The fosse is flat-bottomed and has an average width of 2.4m. The inner bank rises 4.25m on average above the base of the fosse and falls .5m to the interior of the rath. It is almost flush with the level of the interior at S. It is 4.7m to 6m wide at its base and tall trees crown its crest. Some large boulders were used in its basal construction. An entrance, 3.5m wide, is located at ESE and is marked on both sides by remnants of rough stone facing. There is a corresponding causeway across the fosse here, with a noticeable scatter of stone.
