Knockaunnahona Fort — Gearha South

Knockaunnahona Fort/Cnocán na hÓna: This site was located on elevated ground within a plantation of deciduous trees on the N bank of the Blackwater river. Marked as a circular enclosure on the OS maps, it appears to have been almost entirely removed and a large section of ground has been dug into at SE. The OSNB recorded a 'fort and cave' with 'traces of an old ruin' at this location (Templeno, 47). The first edition of the OS map indicates a rectangular structure (KE091-041001-), centrally located in the interior of the enclosure. This area is now marked only by a subrectangular depression, 3.6m N-S by 2.9m E-W, with a maximum depth of 1.4m. It is littered with rubbish and features a small opening close to its S edge. This opening measures .55m x .3m and is .7m deep, and it may mark the location of the souterrain. Two further openings were noted to NW and NE of the depression, and may possibly be a part of the same souterrain (KE091-041002-). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
