Field boundary in Derreenacahill

In level, cutaway bog. A network (c. 100m x 70m) of pre-bog field walls, consisting of white-coloured stones, exposed in cutaway bog. At S a wall extends W for c. 70m, turns N for a distance of 80m, then veers E for c. 30m and finally turns N again for c. 22m where the wall disappears under uncut bog. Another stretch of wall branches off the main N-S wall, at c. 35m from the S end, and extends to the E, terminating near a modern boundary fence. At this point, this stretch of wall is c. 50m N of the initial E-W stretch to the S. In general the ruinous walls (T 1m; H 0.5m), which are set on base clay, survive clearly where the turf is removed. Elsewhere in uncut bog, some stones from the tops of the walls protrude intermittently above the bog surface.
