Enclosure in Cummeenduvasig

In rough peaty pasture, on a SE-facing slope, on the W side of the valley of the Owbaun River. A circular area (16.4m E-W; 16m N-S) defined by the remains of a stone wall (T 1.2m; H 0.6m). The wall W-E consists of a core of small stones and earth faced by an inner and outer row of contiguous upright slabs. Large boulders are used occasionally in the wall instead of the uprights. A modern drystone wall (H 1m) E-W is superimposed on, and obscures, an earlier wall (T 1.2m). Traces of upright slabs are visible at the base, both internally and externally. The S portion of the interior is raised and the N portion is cut into the upslope to compensate for the hillslope. There is a slight depression in the S wall externally. Outside this, a level, roughly circular area (diam c. 2.2m) was noted. The interior of this area is covered with loose stones. A relict field boundary (KE084-005001-) extends to the N just N of this enclosure. There are burnt spreads (KE084-005003-, KE084-005004-) c. 30m to the NE and c. 140m to the SW respectively. A standing stone (KE084-005002-) lies c. 40m to the NNE, in the adjoining field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry.
