Field system in Caherlehillan

In rough boggy pasture, on the N side of the valley of the Ferta River. This field system, which was identified and recorded by Harte (2002), covers an area measuring 1.2km E-W x 500m N-S. The surviving linear and curvilinear walls protrude above the surface of the bog and are generally in an overgrown and collapsed condition. The walls (av. max. T 0.93m; av. max. H 0.8m) mainly comprise slabs set upright and at right angles to the line of the wall. Some boulders and smaller rounded and angular rubble stones were also noted. In some cases the wall is stone lined with a peaty core. In other instances outcropping rock has been incorporated into the walls. The system comprises fields of various shapes and sizes, but wedge-shaped fields appear to predominate. There are two wedge tombs (KE070-035----, KE070-036----), a cashel (KE070-042----), a children's burial ground (KE070-043001-), a cross-inscribed stone (KE070-043002-), a shrine (KE070-043003-) and eight hut sites (KE070-034----, KE070-037----, KE070-038----, KE070-039----, KE070-042001-, KE070-042002-, KE070-121----, KE070-129----) within the field system.
