Fulacht fia in Freemount

In level marshy grazing, with views SW to the Paps of Dana. A roughly horseshoe-shaped mound (c. 22m E-W; c. 17m N-S; H 1.8m) of burnt material with the opening (7m N-S; c. 7m E-W) facing W, is largely obscured by gorse and briars. An open drain skirts the mound along the S and W sides, and has revealed burnt material along both faces of the drain to a depth of 0.8m. Spoil, containing clay and some burnt material from the drain, is placed haphazardly along the S and W sides of the mound and along the outer bank of the drain. Spoil heaps and machine damage may have distorted the size of the mound. It is largely inaccessible due to dense overgrowth. This is probably the fulacht fia recorded in the 1940s in Mrs D. Murphy's land (listed under the adjoining townland of Knockacappul), and which was described as circular and '20 feet [6.1m] in diameter and 2 feet [0.61m] high' (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry).
