What is recorded here

In the 1940s a 'huge rath', which was 'impossible to explore due to overgrowth', was recorded at the summit of an earthen mound on the 'lands of Mrs. McCarthy' (ITA). It has not been precisely located. It may be one of the two raths (see KE066-061----) recorded in the 1840s as being in the S side of this townland (OSNB, Aghadoe, no. 1, 21). A souterrain (KE066-089001-) and a well (KE066-089002-) are associated with the rath. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
