What is recorded here

The foundation of this site is attributed to Saint Cummin Fada (d. 661-2). He entered Clonfert monastery Co. Galway and subsequently established a foundation here where he became abbot. Cummian was a stout defender of the Roman liturgy against the Celtic school and his Paschal epistle is still extant (Cummian's Letter: De controversia Paschali. Maura Walsh and Dáibhí Ó Cróinín (eds), Pontifical Institute of Medieval StudiesToronto (1988). Studies and Texts, No. 86). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
