Promontory fort — coastal in Cill Fearnóg

Promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; ‘A small south-facing headland slopes steeply down from the narrow isthmus. The mainland overlooks the summit of the headland across a deep narrow chasm to the west. A short earthen bank and the hint of a fosse run across the neck and the remains of a perimeter bank on the headland suggest that this may be the remains of a defended headland. On the mainland immediately inland of this promontory are the remains of two parallel banks running halfway across the east-facing headland comprising Kilfarnoge townland. Three fields farther west are the remains of a wide levelled earthen bank running across the entire headland, and these features, together with the more substantial earthworks across Parkmore Point, may make up part of a large promontory fort, which would make the small defended headlands along the shore secondary subsidiary fortifications or inner citadels’ (Casey 2002, 54, no.
