Tomb — chest tomb in An Gróbh

One of three medieval / post-medieval memorials in the graveyard to the E of the church (KE043-224005-). This record is for the FitzGerald slab which is dated 1504. 16th century chest-tomb described by Bradley (1987, 69-70) as follows; 'Tapering sandstone slab lying S.E of the church, now broken into two sections. Decorated with three heraldic shields, the upper containing the arms of the Munster FitzGeralds The second shield contains a heart with the inscription: HM. KT. H, and the lower shield bears a saltire between three objects resembling eagle' s heads. At the narrow end is an incised Latin cross with the letters INRI above it, and the inscription B. S. E. C. ( S)A INDEOAOA beneath it. Marginal inscription: TRINITAS: INDIVIDVAS:SALVA:NOS/ O:PATER:M:N.P.ET.I.AM.AMEN 1504. BEO.B. GAR/ DIE.LE.G/ and separate from the main inscription, the letters EAT. S/ and S.L. The meaning of the inscription is obscure.
