Calluragh Burial Ground: This site lies on a S facing slope overlooking Ventry Harbour and it abuts the S side of an E-W field fence. On the 1st edition of the OS map it is shown as roughly semi-circular in plan, with a N-S field wall dividing it into 2 roughly equal portions. On the 2nd edition of the OS map it is more oval in outline. Only that portion which lies E of the dividing field fence now survives. It consists of a stony mound or platform measuring 13m NE-SW x 8.2m E-W x .3 to .4m high. A 2nd calluragh lies c. 50m to W, in the same field. Only one calluragh is described in the OSNB (Ventry, 22) and it is not clear to which the description applies: 'a small square plot about one chain (20m) long and the same broad composed chiefly of stones'. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 881. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
