Children's burial ground in Leataoibh Meánach

Calluragh burial ground/An Cheallúnach: This small calluragh burial ground and cross-inscribed stone are located at the foot of the NW slopes of Lateevemore about 150m N of the Saints road (KE034-112001-). It lies directly S of the entrance to the field in which it is located and is continually being trampled by cattle. A stone water trough has been installed at the N end of the site and this has partly displaced the cross-slab and may cause further damage in the future. The burial ground (KE042-118001-) is roughly rectangular in plan, measuring 11.4m N-S x 5.7m E-W. Its E side is defined by a straight field fence, its N side by a .5 to .6m high scarp on top of which are 2 large boulders, and its W side by 3 large stones, but the SW and S sectors are distinguished from the remainder of the field only by their rough and uncultivated nature. The S half of the site is raised c. 0.4m above the N half and the step between the two parts is formed by a line of recumbent stones. The cross-slab (KE042-118002-) measures .9m in height, .54m in maximum width and .075 to .085m in thickness. It now leans heavily to NE. The SW face is inscribed with a large, roughly equal-armed cross with widely expanded terminals. The angles between the arms and head of the cross are occupied by 3 small dots and there is 1 possible dot in one of the lower angles. These dots are paralleled on Stone D from Reask (KE042-060016-) (Fanning 1981, 143). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.
