What is recorded here

In 1948, while quarrying for stones, 2 and possibly more slab-lined pits were discovered here at the entrance to Gleann Locha, less than 100m from the Meennascarty river (NMI; CKFC 1948). They lay parallel to each other about 2 feet (.6m) apart. One measured 6 feet x 2 feet 1 inch (1.8m x .6m). They were lined with stones on edge, a single slab closing each end, and the lintelled roofs lay about 1 foot (.3m) below the surface. No bones were found inside. They are not now visible and the precise location has not been recorded. About 100 yards (c. 90m) to E some fairly large hut sites were also noted but these could not be found on this occasion. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 200. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 4 August 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
