Rock art in Glanteenassig

An earthfast boulder lying beside the S gable of a ruined outhouse on the N verge of a trackway leading W towards Lough Slat. It measures 1.4m E-W x .77m x c. 0.26m thick. The entire upper surface is covered by a large number of cup-marks and possible cup-marks varying in diameter from .09 to .015m, with a maximum depth of c. 0.03m; these are quite irregular and uneven compared to other examples. The surface of the stone is also extensively pitted as a result of weathering and some of the smaller, less well-defined cup-marks may have a similar origin. The above description is derived from J. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 4 August 2013 On level, grass-covered margin (118m OD), on N side of small road; Gable of old stone outbuilding is c. 40cm to N. Excellent views along valley of Owencashlia river toward Tralee Bay, at NE. Lough Slat is c. 450m to WSW, although it not visible from this rock art site. Glanteenassig Forest inhibits views W->N->NE. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 1.31m ENE-WSW; 0.85m NNW-SSE; max. H 0.24m) which is covered by sod around the edges and by moss and grasses along N and S sides. This rock art example has an oblong decorated surface (dims. 1.31m ENE-WSW; 0.85m NNW-SSE) with a slight SW-facing tilt. The decorative elements are in a reasonable condition, although quite weathered. The motifs consist of approximately thirty-four cupmarks (diam. 3.5-8cm; D 5-21mm) and about thirty pock marks (diam. 1-1.5cm; D 3-4mm) upon its flat, upper surface.
