House — prehistoric in Killierisk

'During the course of test trenching on this site in Killierisk townland a total of 33 trenches were opened. Archaeological features and strata were only noted in two adjoining trenches at the south-western end of the field. Here a slot trench and a series of postholes representing a circular structure 2.6m in diameter. The slot trench was 0.30m in width and contained large amounts of charcoal. Post holes were noted as part of the main structure,. Both along the perimeter, internally and outside the line of the slot trench. A possible hearth was also noted internally. The only find from the site was a large piece of rock crystal found in the slot trench. The excavator interpreted the site as a possible Bronze Age house, comparing it to similar structures excavated at sites around Ireland, particularly Chancellorsland, Tipperary (Doody, 2000, 135-160). Charcoal from the site subsequently returned a calibrated (Sigma 2) date of 1760-1600 BC (3380 ±40 BP; 3710-3550 Cal. BP; Beta 199747).'
