Church in Finuge

The medieval parish church of Finuge (Fionnúig) stands in the townland of Finuge, parish of Finuge, diocese of Ardfert and barony of Clanmaurice. In 1302 the papal taxation of the Diocese of Ardfert valued the Church of 'Fynwach' at 20s. per annum with the tithe valued at 2s. (Cal. doc. Ire., Vol. 5, 297). In 1487 there is a reference to the cleric, Patrick de Curcy and the parish church of 'Funich' (O'Connell and Costello 1958, 35). In 1498 the rectory of the parish church of Finuge is to be united to the diocesan chancellory for the lifetime of Thomas Lombrai (Lombard?) (ibid., 42). In 1615 the Royal Visitation of the Diocese of Ardfert recorded the following details; 'Vicar de Killahyn [Killehenny KE004-043001-], Dysert [KE010-062----], Listohill [Listowel], Fynoiyr [Finuge KE010-080002-] and Killnyne [Kilmeen]. John Drea minister legens residet. Valoris 5 libri. He teaches school. The Bishop offers to bestow the livings upon any Incumbents as soon as they can be gott. Livings sequestered to ministers. Fruits converted to the repayne [repair] of the church' (Murphy 1915, 185). Depicted as a roughly square field (c. 35.5m N-S; 36m E-W) on the 1841-42 OS 6-inch map and named 'Grave Yard'. On the 1939 OS 6-inch map it is depicted as roughly circular (c. 45m N-S; 42m E-W) in shape and named 'Grave Yard'. According to local knowledge this was known as the 'church field' indicating that the graveyard (KE010-080001-) possibly contains the site of a church.
