This fort is named after the townland and is cut out of the N bank of the Cashen River. About 30 years ago the Board of Works cut a channel through this site in order to drain the land, so what we get today is a very distorted picture. A semi-circular inner raised area of c2m high is cut to the S by an earthen bank (overflow bank) running E-W to NE. The channel which encircles the inner area runs from W-N and then E. It was possibly an enclosing fosse, which was deepened and widened to make the channel.
