Church in Kilmore (clanmaurice By.)

Seven Churches (site of). This site is reputed to have originally contained the 'Seven Churches of Kilmore', and though all the buildings have been levelled, there is still quite an amount of disturbances in the field marking the site. Today this site consists of an enclosure that measures 88m E-W. The S sector of the enclosure has now disappeared, so it is not possible to give its full dimensions. Within this enclosure is a large rectangular structure measuring 46m E-W x 26m N-S. The W side of this structure is cut slightly by a fieldbank running in a N-S direction. Extending out from the N bank of this structure is a bank which runs into another bank running in an E-W direction. The latter bank runs into a depression measuring 10m x 9m. On the W side of the fieldbank there is also a small mound, measuring 3m x 4m at the crest, the W side of which has been cut by the fieldbank. According to the landowner, several stones belonging to the 'churches' have been ploughed up and thrown into the nearby fieldbank. He also said that in the NE sector of the enclosure several stone slabs were uncovered, but no trace of these could be found today. The above description is derived from C.
