Burial Ground — Loughanes

On the 1841 ed. OSi 6-inch map a circular-shaped area (diam. c. 19m) annotated 'Burial Ground' is depicted to the SE of Lisselton Church ruins( KE005-066----). On the 1896 ed. 25-inch OSi map the burial ground has been truncated at NE by a road and at NW by a stream, the burial area is now shown as a small polygonal-shaped burial ground. Lisselton church ruins and burial ground was surveyed in 2010 and described as follows; 'Two areas of glebe lands associated with the vicarage are denoted on the 1841 Ed. OSi six-inch map, the smaller of the two virtually abuts the Children’s Burial Ground (KE005-067----) to the south while the larger glebe, comprising two fields is located to the west. The western tower or belfry of a late 18th century First Fruits Church of Ireland is all that survives of this edifice. The Children’s Burial Ground, is situated along the roadway and is separated physically and liminally from the graveyard by an active stream. A small bridge and trackway provides access to the graveyard over the stream and then extends along two sides of the pentagonal shaped graveyard providing entry to a farm at the south-west corner and a private residence at the north-east. Thirty eight unnamed headstones were recorded within the graveyard while the majority, eighty-eight were mapped within the Children’s Burial Ground across the stream. The majority of the unnamed graves mainly comprise unhewn stones although a few are simple iron crosses from which the engraving or name plate has disappeared' (Dunne 2010).
