Archaeological excavation (Gregory 1999, 1-19: Excavation Licence No. 99E0453) in advance of a Bord Gáis pipeline development revealed three shallow pits and two complete troughs. The pits contained a primary ash layer fill and a layer of charcoal-rich soil mixed with burnt stone. The site extended S, beyond the area of initial excavation, where the northern portion of two more pits were excavated. They had the same fill as the other pits and two flint scrapers were found in one. One of the troughs consisted of a steep-sided oval hollowing of the natural subsoil. Its fill was similar to that of the pits. The other trough was circular. While it had the same fill as the other trough and pits, it was lined with redeposited natural subsoil, the relatively impermeable nature of which helped retain water.
