Ancient Burials (Site of) — Kennycourt

In 1935, Price (1935, 237-9) investigated a report of bones being found in a sand-pit. He was told that some 25 or 30 years previously, some flag stones and a skull, and human bones found about “6 feet away”, had been reburied here. Price found the reburied bones, which transpired to be those of an adult male, ‘in a heap’ but without any grave goods and was further told that at least five other skulls had previously been found in the same sand-pit. He also found a, possibly originally lintelled, cist (L 7 feet 10 inches [c. 2.4m] E-W; Wth 2 feet 6 inches [c. 0.76m] N-S; D 1 foot 6 inches [c. 0.45m]) containing badly broken and redeposited bones which were considered to be in too poor a condition to provide any data. However, the leg and foot bones did not appear to have been disturbed and suggested the body had been placed on its back with the head to the W. No visible surface traces survived in 1972 (SMR file).
