What is recorded here

According to Bradley et al. (1986 vol. 3, 204), there is documentary evidence for the presence of fortified townhouses in Kildare in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, including 'a castle or fortilage' belonging to Great Connell, mentioned in 1540 when it was leased to the Earl of Kildare (White 1943, 159). It was described as ruinous in 1607 (IRC 1830, 2 ix, 92). No visible surface traces survive. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 24 January 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
