According to the list of castles and their owners in county Galway in 1574, there was one in the possession of 'John Oshaghnes' at 'Illand More' (Nolan 1901, 114). Not located. According to Hanley and Miller (1977, 10), 'Illand More' castle is an old name for Thoor Ballylee (GA123-019----), the famous tower house in the townland of Ballylee, 1km to the NW of Islandmore.
