Church (in ruins) — Newtown (glynn)

Occupying the NNE sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA122-120001-), this rectangular church (11.2m NE-SW; 5.1m NW-SE; wall T 0.85-0.95m), which is heavily overgrown with ivy, was built on a foundation of large roughly squared limestone blocks. The walls of the NE and SW gables, and the SW side-wall are built of smaller roughly dressed and coursed mortared blocks. The NW wall is slightly different and consists of larger more squared off and more regularly coursed blocks, suggesting that it may be the wall of an earlier church that was subsequently enlarged. At a later period a tower (2.2m NE-SW; 1.4m NW-SE; wall T 0.75m), possibly a bell tower, was added to the N end of the SW gable; it is set slightly back from the gable wall. It is constructed of larger more randomly coursed blocks and it is not bonded into the fabric of the church. It appears to open into the church and it may have housed the stairs leading to a bell. The only architectural feature noted was a partially robbed-out window at ground level in the SW gable. The embrasure it is set in appears to continue to the top of the wall and a second window noted higher up in it on inspection in 1982 (SMR file) was not visible. A gap (Wth 2.7) at the E end of the SE side-wall may indicate the location of the doorway. There is also a separate burial ground (GA122-120003-) in the enclosure, it lies c. 40m to the SE.
