M.S. — Raheen Kilkelly

In a grassy verge at a T-junction on the E side of the road. This milestone, named ‘M.S.’ on the 1922 edition of the OS 6-inch map, has been moved about 20m to the N of its original location (ITM 544585, 707972). It consists of a trapezoidal-shaped limestone pillar (max. H 1.37m; Wth 0.31m at front, 0.46m at rear; D 0.32m) with a narrow chamfers to the front margins. The upper part of the pillar is well dressed and some fine tooling marks are visible on the N face. Three faces are inscribed – the N face reads: ‘3 From Gort’, the W or front face: ‘14 From Galway’ and the S face: ‘9½ From Oranmore’. On the N face a narrow light fillet or moulding separates the number 3 from the text below it. Above this line the face is cut back by 0.01m (O’Sullivan 2021, No. 4).
