What is recorded here

In pastureland overlooking bogland from SE to N and immediately to the N of the townaland boundary between Cloonoo East and Cloonoo West. Described in the OS Letters as 'a castle ... the site of which ... is still traceable' (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 475). Indicated on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map as an almost square area (c. 9m NW-SE; c. 8m NE-SW) defined by a broken line. All that now survives is an oval-shaped area (E-W 28m), rough underfoot and with many hollows and boulder-like stones scattered around it. In the SW part there is a low irregular mound with a flattish summit (diam 9m). This may mark the site of the castle itself.
