Kiltullagh Church (in ruins) — Kiltullagh North

In gently undulating grassland, to the NE of Kiltullagh village. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 1 500-502) 'two portions of the side wall' of this church survived in 1838. Traces of a window ope were evident at one end of the larger stretch, which was roughly '33 feet [c. 10m]' in length. A base-batter was evident on both wall-faces but it was more pronounced on one side. There was a gap of '18 feet [c. 5.4m]' between this section and the shorter one, which was '7 feet [c. 2.1m] in length' and there was another gap of 'Seven feet [c. 2.1m]' between it and the vestiges of the gable to which it had been attached'. The gable wall was reduced 'to a level with the ground'. On the basis of the surviving remains it was estimated that the original length of the church was '65 feet [c. 19.8m]'. All that now survives is a featureless stretch of the longer section of walling, which appears to be the N side-wall (L 4m; H 3-4m; T 0.8m) of the church. It is constructed of roughly cut uncoursed mortared blocks of limestone and both ends have been rebuilt and secured with cement. A slight base-batter is visible on the external wall-face. The wrought iron cross set on top of the wall is most likely to have originally marked a burial in the surrounding graveyard (GA097-114001-) (Higgins 1998, 1-4). A font (GA097-114002-) that has been reused to mark a grave in the SW section of the graveyard is probably from the church, as is a small piece of ashlar stone, with sparrow-pocked tooling of 16th or 17th century date, which has been inserted below the capping of the enclosing graveyard wall. A number of medieval graveslabs are also visible (see GA097-114003- to GA097-114006-).
