In low-lying pastureland. Holt (1912, 243, no. 54) referred to a hillock known as ‘Castleknock’ on the old road from Clarinbridge to the west and stated that it showed ‘evident traces of ancient foundations’ that seemed ‘to represent a small castle, bawn and bailey built on the site of a Gaelic work’; he also noted an ope which exposed a ‘souterrain’. He supposed that the castle, of which no record existed, stood on the road with its bawn extending to the S and the small bailey to the W (ibid.). On inspection in March 1993, no visible surface traces of any of these features were evident.
