On W bank of the River Corrib opposite the town of Galway (GA094-100----) in the area known as the Claddagh. This was a Premonstratensian cell, in existence in 1235, and probably a dependant of the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, Tuam, which was founded in the first decade of the 13th C (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 206). Known as 'The Chapel of St Mary on the Hill' but reputed to have begun its life as a hospital (GA094-091004-). In 1451 it 'was merely a chapel' and by 1488 it 'had been empty and disused for a long time' (ibid., 204, 255). No visible trace survives. Site subsequently occupied by a Dominican friary (GA094-091----).
