At a route centre in undulating farm and bogland. Knox (1901b, 370) states that, 'it appears … there was a castle at Aughrim with some settlers about it' in the early 14th C, citing as his source 'a paper of 1324'. Though the site of a castle (GA087-055----) is known on NE outskirts of the modern village, the exact location or character of this settlement is uncertain (Holland 1988, 81). The only other possible settlement indicators are the site of a priory (GA087-067----), 195m SE of the castle, and an unclassified ecclesiastical building (GA087-053001-), 375m to SW, beside the RC church.
