What is recorded here

On a hummock in undulating grassland. Poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 34m, E-W 29m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank is present at S and elsewhere a scarp, overlain from SSW to W by a field boundary, forms the enclosing element. The fosse survives from NE through E to S. A gap (Wth 4m) at SE may be original. Quarrying has encroached upon the enclosing elements from S to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
