What is recorded here

Surrounding a church (GA071-082003-). Aerial reconnaissance in July 1917 (CUCAP BGI 34) revealed a large subrectangular enclosure (NNE-SSW c. 90m, ESE-WNW c. 40m ext.) around the church. This is best preserved along N and E sides where it is visible on the ground as an earthen scarp (H 1m max.) with traces of an external fosse. Two drainage trenches run into the fosse at NE and N, and NW corner appears to be overlain by tillage ridges. Apart from the church, which stands in N half of the enclosure, no other internal features are visible, but a number of indistinct cropmarks are visible from the air immediately to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
