What is recorded here

On level farmland. Marked 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1932) as a wide curving fosse, immediately S of a kink in a laneway which also marks the td. boundary: the configuration suggests that it is defining SW sector of an earthwork which possibly straddled the boundary. According to local information, it was a large 'fort' which was levelled in the early 1970s. All that is now visible is a low oval platform (NW-SE 40m, NE-SW 23m), to SW of the laneway, with slight traces of a wide external fosse (Wth 6m) at W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
