A Carmelite friary was founded in 1356 at Ballynahinch by one of the O'Flahertys. Though mentioned in the list of re-established Carmelite convents of c. 1737, the site cannot be located today. The OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 134-5) record that it possibly stood on the site of the present mansion (i.e. Ballynahinch Castle). The vicinity of Church Lake, in W part of Ballynahinch Castle demesne, or the burial ground in the adjoining townland of Killeen (GA036-009----) are two other possible locations.
