What is recorded here

In grassland surrounded by a stream to the W and N. On inspection in July 1984, this children's burial ground consisted of an overgrown subrectangular area (WNW-ESE c. 23m, NNE-SSW c. 18m) enclosed by an earthen field bank. Within the interior graves were marked by a number of haphazardly placed set stones of limestone and sandstone. Access was gained at N and an entrance at SE, depicted on the 3rd ed.of OS 6-inch map (1931), was disused and marked by a holly tree. The burial ground subsequently underwent works by a local group. St Brendan's Well (GA032-043----) lies c. 60m to N. (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 109). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Updated by: Olive Alcock Date of revised upload: 26 June 2023
