What is recorded here

In tillage overlooking marshy land to SW. Marked on OS 6-inch maps as an oval enclosure (N-S c. 75m, E-W c. 50m). No visible surface trace survives. Probably a bivallate ringfort as Costello (1903, 2-3) noted the existence of 'two mounds and intervening ditch'. The inner face of the inner bank contained 'several large stones still remaining and it was probably when perfect, faced with these boulders' (ibid). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
